2000 – 2006
For six years, Zélie Jopling organised music days every year during the school holidays for young people in the Colchester area, to encourage them to take up an instrument or singing. Her daughter Juliet Jopling gathered together her favourite musicians for a weekend of chamber music concerts each Autumn in Fingringhoe Church, whose whitewashed walls, chairs arranged in a semi-circle and perfect acoustic made for a magical and intimate concert venue. Fingringhoe is a lovely village overlooking the Essex marshes, a few miles south of Colchester, well off the beaten track and with a village pub a few yards away from the church. We still use the church every year for the festival.
The performers for these six years were Claudia Ajmone-Marsan, James Boyd, Mia Cooper, Simon Crawford-Phillips, Tom Dunn, Chris George, Allan Granville, Horses Brawl, Tim Horton, Juliet Jopling, David Kirby, Eleanor Meynell, Robin Michael, Alice Neary, Amy Norrington, Richard Ormrod, Krysia Osostowicz, Stella Pendrous, Matthew & Rebecca Sharp, Katherine Spencer and Matthew Truscott.
The first year we featured a local artist (Elizabeth Morris) and the first festival programmed by Orlando Jopling. 3 concerts at the Lakeside Theatre, Fingringhoe Church and Fingringhoe Village Hall, with Simon Crawford-Phillips, Kate Gould, Ben Griffiths, Juliet Jopling, Philip Moore, Benjamin Nabarro, Laura Zakian and her trio.
