Brightlingsea-based recording producer Rachel Smith reflects on why she became a Friend of Roman River.
‘I moved here eighteen years ago, relieved to leave the noise and fumes of London for sea air and wide horizons. I was delighted to find the Roman River Festival and see it expand over the years to encompass a myriad of music-making and educational projects.
What I love about the festival is not just that it brings really high-class musicians to the area and introduces us to some beautiful and unexpected venues, but that it offers so much more to all areas of the community. I was particularly impressed by the ‘In the spotlight’ project, where a promising young musician is given the opportunity to perform a piece as an ‘hors d’oeuvre’ before the main festival concert.
I’ve never been a ‘Friend’ of a festival before, but this one caught my imagination. It is run by a hard-working and creative crew of people who encourage young people to participate through composition, coaching and side-by-side rehearsal schemes. They definitely deserve our support!’
