Get Involved!

We create opportunities for over 1,000 young people to compose, perform or listen to music and get involved in the performing and visual arts.

Research shows that involvement in music helps boosts self confidence and teamwork. Every year, we actively involve thousands of people in music. There’s a range of projects for different age groups. Nobody is excluded.

We start with our early years concerts for the under-fives and their families, these concerts are relaxed events where children can meet musicians and take part in the wonderful musical adventure through interactive songs and stories.

Our inspirational animateurs get whole primary school classes singing, composing and performing and  up to a dozen secondary schools every year enjoy internationally renowned performers giving interactive recitals.

For budding young musicians, we offer the chance to perform alongside top professionals (our ‘side by side’ project), and/or to showcase their talents in a five minute spotlight slot at the beginning of one of our main concerts.

If you’re aged under 30, our National Lottery support via the Arts Council means we can offer tickets to all our concerts for the hugely subsidised price of £6 or less!

For adults, our Roman River Come & Sing! choir brings the health-giving and uplifting gift of singing to anyone and everyone.

The charity combines strong grassroots support from over 100 volunteers with a truly international quality programme.

In-School Recitals offer inspirational, interactive recitals and workshops from our visiting musicians to primary and secondary schools, and an insight concert for GCSE and A level students.

Primary School Singing Projects offer primary schools the opportunity to be involved in the Roman River festival through a series of workshops and a performance at the festival!

We are committed to uncovering and developing talent within Colchester and the surrounding Essex/Suffolk communities. Working with local schools and other partner organisations, not only do we create pathways for young people to experience the highest quality performances within easy reach of their homes, but we also enhance instrumental learning and prowess through providing exceptionally gifted young people with performance opportunities where they take centre stage.

Volunteering is a fantastic way to learn new skills and build confidence while helping to put on one of the country’s most exciting cultural festivals.

Roman River volunteers are a diverse and supportive community who are passionate about the arts, the festival and our local area. They have access to special events during the Festival and at other times of the year. And of course there’s the “after-show party” to which everyone involved in the festival is invited!
